I've heard of this free software called Virtual Router that allows you to turn your computer into a router per se. Strictly speaking, by definition of a router, it doesn't. But it looks like it serves the purpose of a wireless router configured for 802.11 services. It's also free, so I gave it a shot. I've managed to turn a broadband connection from a USB connector (SMART, that is) into a wi-fi hotspot offering WPA2-PSK encryption and a view-able list of devices connected.

However, a problem occurred after some time using it. That is, when I click on the Start Virtual Router button, a window would appear saying that "Virtual Router Can't Be Started". Some suggest to simply restart the program, or wait some time. Sometimes this won't work, and not for everyone. Why? Sometimes, the targets can get mixed up, specifically when the settings is inconsistent between the Virtual Router Software, the wireless adapter, and the adapter used for your internet connection. Also, the settings in the "Network and Sharing" can "forget" the settings required by the Virtual Router software. Therefore, below I set some steps to reset everything and configure the proper settings for Virtual Router to work. (for Windows 7)

.) Disconnect your internet connection and close Virtual Router (make sure to End Process in task manager).

.) Open Task Manager.

.) Click on the "Services" button found at the lower right corner.

.) Look for Virtual Router Service and click "Restart" (or start it if it is not started).

.) Go to "Control Panel", then "Network and Internet", then "Network and Sharing Center", then "Change Adapter Settings" at the left,

.) Right-Click in front of the adapter where you connect to the internet.

.) Click on Properties.

.) Click on the Sharing tab.

.) Tick the "Allow other network users to connect... blah blah blah" and select your wireless adapter driver (usually Local Area Connection 2 or Wireless Connection 2) below the "Home Networking Connection".

.) Click Ok.

.) Start Virtual Router Manager and you're ready to go. Share your connection with family, friends, and co-workers! Best of all, this software is FREE!
